Upon hearing all the commotion, the two healers came back in, holding some of the equipment they had scrounged up. "Oh no..." the assistant said, setting her things down. She hurried to Enethar's side and rolled him over. On seeing his eyes open, she said, "oh, you're awake." But it struck her as strange that he was not screaming as he had been earlier. The healer came to her side and they lifted him up and back onto the table. "Alright, we better start the procedure then," the healer said. But the assistant noticed something. Part of his shirt was up, and she could not see any marks on his skin. "Wait..." The assistant pulled his shirt aside, exposing the injuries. The red was still there from the poisoning, but it was reduced somehow. His injuries were cleaner, though still oozing some blood and pus. She gently palpated the area, and he tried to push her hand away. "I know it hurts, just bear with me," she said. What on earth... it's like he started regenerating... She put her stethoscope on and pressed the end to the wounded area. The veins do not sound as sluggish... She stopped. "I can't get a heartbeat," she said, shocked. "And there is no breathing either." The healer raised an eyebrow, then joined her with her own stethoscope. "You're right. What the hell is going on?" She looked back at Enethar's face. He was blinking slowly and seemed to be watching them. But he was not breathing. He had no heartbeat. Even as she had her hand on his skin, it was starting to turn cold.
It was then that Venus entered the room. The door was wide open, so she did not bother knocking. "How is he-?" she saw the looks on their faces and asked a new question: "What's wrong?"
"He's alive," the healer said, "but there is no heartbeat or breathing."
"Impossible."
"Yes, but there you have it."
Venus was rather phased by the healer's quick acceptance of this. "I saw the most bizarre things in my life. I've merely come to accept the unnatural," the healer explained.
"So what do I tell the girl?"
"Whatever you want."
"And what will you do with him?"
"Treat his injuries. Though I don't think the treatment will hold. I've never dealt with this before. But if he has no heart and no lungs, then the infection may fester. Not spread or leave, just fester there. And if this situation fixes itself, then who knows." She went to the cart and took her instruments. "Let's get to work," she said to the assistant. "You should go, Venus."
"When can the girl see him?"
"I don't care. Just so long as she doesn't interfere."
Venus watched the healer stab a large catheter into his femoral artery, and then she left.
